Swoooon! We are so in love with this gorgeous, delicate Maggie Sottero gown. The lace and a-line cut gives the dress a romantic feel that any bride is sure to love. The Story: Why ALS?
The dress owner, Jen, with her dad at an ALS fundraising walk.
So why ALS? And why this dress? It all starts with my mentor, Jen, and her dad, Ken. Officially, Jen was my manager, but truthfully she impacted my life in more ways than I can count. Jen taught me the importance of thoughtfulness, positivity, knowing your strengths and believing in yourself. Cheesy - but true!
Throughout my time working with Jen, I became very aware of ALS (aka Lou Gehrig’s disease), which her dad, Ken, had been diagnosed with a few years before I joined the team. ALS is a terminal neurodegenerative disease whose victims progressively lose their ability to walk, talk and breath. Typically, victims like Jen's dad become completely incapacitated and die from respiratory failure within 2-5 years after diagnosis. Suddenly an issue that was previously so foreign to me became very real.
So how does this all tie into a giveaway for a wedding gown? Well, despite a hard-fought battle with the disease, Jen’s dad passed away from ALS just three and a half months before her wedding day. From the walk down the aisle to the father-daughter dance, so much about her vision of her wedding day suddenly changed - including her dress.
Given her special day was scheduled to coincide with what would’ve been her parents 44th wedding anniversary, she decided she wanted her dress to be a tribute to her parents marriage and "in sickness and in health" vows. So, instead of wearing the storybook Maggie Sottero dress she had originally planned to wear, she decided to work with a seamstress to create a custom gown using the lace from her mom’s vintage 1970s dress and veil.
While she couldn't have imagined a better way to honor her dad, at the same time she still dreamed of somehow using the Maggie Sottero grown to create a silver lining of sorts: bringing joy to another bride, while somehow supporting the search for a cure to ALS. Her goal? To raise awareness of - and $10,000 for - the ALS Association of Texas who directly served her father and family during their tender journey with ALS.
